Verizon and AT&T to offer 4G LTE version of iPad 3?

Apple

According to a report, the follow-up to Apple's iPad 2 (pictured) may wind up supporting 4G LTE networks.

As we get closer to the beginning of March — which is when Apple may announce its next-generation tablet — more and more reports about the iPad 3 seem to be floating around. One of the latest? That a version of the device will offer support for speedy 4G LTE networks.

The Wall Street Journal reports that "people familiar with the matter" say that Verizon Wireless and AT&T will "sell a version of the coming iPad that runs on their newest fourth-generation wireless networks." This report is bolstered by the fact that it matches some prior, separately sourced rumors about the next-generation Apple device.

Up until now, Apple has rejected 4G LTE technology when it comes to its mobile devices — likely due to LTE's tendency to drain batteries rapidly — but building an LTE-enabled version of the iPad would suggest that the company is not only keeping up with the competition, but also intending to add the technology to the next generation iPhone as well. Oh, and it would also suggest that the rumors about the next-generation devices including higher-capacity batteries are likely true — though they may not end up providing additional battery life.
