Senator asks Twitterati: Yea or nay on gay marriage vote?

Whether it's a publicity gimmick or a genuine effort to gauge public sentiment, New York state senator Greg Ball, who says he's not sure how to vote on legislation allowing gay marriage, is asking those on Twitter to tweet how he should cast his ballot.

"So, if you were me, how would you vote on gay marriage, yes or no?" tweeted the Republican from New York's 40th district. It's no idle question, as Ball is among some of his party's undecided legislators, with a vote that could come as soon as today.

In a news video on his website, Ball explains: "As a legislator you have to stand somewhere in the middle, unless you're going to try to pander to one side or another, and just try to listen to both sides with respect and dignity."

He's getting an earful, with tweets directed at "@ball4ny." And if the responses so far are any gauge, folks on Twitter are definitely in favor of gay rights:

But some are a bit more cynical about the Twitter turnout, and where the responses are coming from. Tweeted Azi Paybarah: "...@ball4NY told me responses he got to marriage survey were about 'a thousand to one' but were coming from outside his dstrt"
